Cleaning small heat exchanger tubes

Small heat exchanger tubes are generally difficult to clean. Especially when the deposit in the tubes is harder than normal. This includes limescale fouling, rust and biological deposits. When tubes become completely clogged due to fouling, it is very difficult to return them to a good condition. For this job, Goodway Benelux offers the PSM-500 drilling system. This is an air-powered tube cleaning system that can clean and drill open straight heat exchanger tubes if necessary. The system can be used for tube internal diameters between 6,4 and 25,4 millimeters (1/4'' - 1'').

Applications and usage

The PSM-500 drilling system is used in combination with special drill rods. These rods are available in various diameters and lengths. The PSM-500 can be used for tube internal diameters between 6,4 and 25,4 millimeters (1/4'' - 1''). The system is often used for relatively short tube lengths, such as a total length of 2 - 2,5 meters. If the tubes are longer, it becomes more difficult because the connection between the drill rods becomes more fragile. For longer tube lengths, please contact us to discuss the situation.

Cleaning and then descaling

The PSM-500 drilling system is often only used when the deposit build-up is so extreme that there are no other options left. In most cases, a chemical cleaning is the best solution to remove hard deposits, such as limescale. However, this is not an option when the tubes are clogged. In that case it is useful to first drill open all the blocked tubes with the PSM-500. When the tubes are open, the residual fouling can be removed by circulating a descaler, such as Scalebreak-MP, through the tubes.

Scope of supply PSM-500

The PSM-500 drilling system is supplied without accessories and carrying case. You need accessories to use the system. The system has a water and air hose, both have a length of 5 meters (15'). There are 2 different types of drill rods available:

• Hollow shafts, these are shafts which can be connected to each other to increase the total length. You can attach a cleaning or brush to these shafts.
• Hollow drills, these are complete drilling rods with an integrated drill head. The length is final, these drills cannot be connected to increase the cleaning length, it's one solid piece.

Please note: the PSM-500 drilling system is powered by compressed air. Like any air-powered machine, the motor must be lubricated during use to continue to function properly. It is also good to supply clean, filtered air. For this purpose, Goodway Benelux supplies the GTC-705-4 air lubrication and filtration device. This tool is not supplied as standard with the PSM-500.
